RefreshinQ+A: Angela Naeth, Professional Triathlete

The RefreshinQ Co. is proud to work with athletes who never quit. Today, we’re chatting with Angela Naeth, winner of multiple 70.3 Ironman Championships, former orthopedic physiotherapist, fan of RefreshinQ’s packs and current lover of black licorice. 

Q: How did you first get into triathlon?

A: I first saw a triathlon on TV when I was 10 years old and living in British Columbia, Canada, and it always stuck with me. I was a middle-distance track athlete throughout college, but it wasn’t until a year after I graduated that I decided I wanted to give triathlon a real shot. I had no idea what I was doing or what I was getting myself into—but I loved it. I loved the variety, and I kept working to get better.

Q: How do you stay motivated? What do you tell yourself when the going gets tough during a race?

A: The biggest thing is that I know I’m doing something that I love. Even though it’s tough sometimes, it’s a choice, and my choice is to be the best I can with the time I’m given as an athlete. You only have a finite time to really be a top professional athlete, to see what I’m capable of at my peak—and that’s usually enough to get me through!

Q: What’s one of your proudest accomplishments as an athlete?

A: Winning the North American Ironman National Championship in 2015 was a big one for me, personally. It was one of those races where everything really came together perfectly. My team and my trainers, we all came together and executed a great race. It was a team effort.

Q: What are some of your keys to staying at your best? What kind of advice do you have for people who want to step up their fitness?

A: I think the most important thing to remember is that consistency is key. If you’re not working within a routine, you’re not going to see the results that you want. Even if it’s a small thing you do every day. If that’s all the time you can afford, that still goes a long way. It adds up. Take just 15 or 20 minutes and go for a jog. It’s one of the easiest things you can do and it’s a great workout.

Q: Who is one of your biggest inspirations?

A: My former coach Mark Allen was a great inspiration during a formative time in my career. He helped me see a different side of the sport, and why I do this sport. It’s about pushing yourself and being a part of something more than being an athlete. Mark won the Ironman World Championship six times. I keep tons of old emails from him that I can look back on any time I need a little bit of inspiration.

Q: What’s the most surprising thing about you?

A: I like black licorice. I know a lot of people don’t like it, but I really love it. And I have double-jointed thumbs!
